The Golden Chain project 2025: students from the Center for Music from the East play the tradition of the Barashi community from Kurdistan A unique collaboration between Yad Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, the International Oud Festival, and the Center for Music from the East brings to the stage for the first time the musical heritage of the Barashi community — a synagogue founded by immigrants from the village of Barashi in Kurdistan, in Jerusalem's Nahlaot neighborhood. An ensemble of teachers and students, instrumentalists and singers — together with members of the Barashi community — perform new arrangements of piyyutim that have been preserved from generation to generation by three long-established Kurdish-Jerusalemite families: Barashi, Yehoshua, and Barazani. A short documentary film created by Hannani Horvitz, recounting the process of encounter and collaborative work between the students and community members — a process that took place throughout 2025 in Jerusalem.
