More About the Project: A unique collaboration between the International Oud Festival, Yad Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, and the Center for Music from the East brings to the stage for the first time the musical heritage of the Barashi community—a synagogue founded by immigrants from the village of Barashi in Kurdistan, in Jerusalem’s Nahlaot neighborhood. An ensemble of teachers and students, instrumentalists and singers—together with members of the Barashi community—perform new arrangements of piyyutim that have been preserved from generation to generation by three long-established Kurdish-Jerusalemite families: Barashi, Yehoshua, and Barazani.
