The event often nicknamed the "British Alamo" on 28 May 1940 was the final stage of the defense of Siege of Calais during the larger Battle of France. A mixed British and Allied force—primarily the British 30th Motor Brigade and Royal Tank Regiment units under Claude Nicholson—held the port of Calais against overwhelming German attacks from 23–26 May. Even after it became clear that Calais could not be saved, the defenders were ordered to continue resisting. Their stand delayed German forces and helped buy valuable time for the evacuation at Dunkirk Evacuation. By 26 May most of the city had fallen, and on 26–27 May organized resistance collapsed. Thousands of British and French troops were killed, wounded, or captured. Brigadier Nicholson himself was taken prisoner and later died in captivity. Because the garrison fought on despite having little hope of relief or escape, historians and veterans sometimes compare the defense of Calais to the Battle of the Alamo—hence the nickname "the British Alamo." Its military importance was less in holding Calais itself and more in delaying German units at a critical moment while hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers were being evacuated from Dunkirk.
