How Breastmilk is Produced - Physiology of Lactation

Ever wondered how milk is produced?? Here is how... Breastmilk is a source of nutrition for the developing Neonate. It contains all the necessary elements that a baby requires for nutrition. This then highlights the importance of its production to adequate levels for this purposes. The production of breastmilk is regulated mainly by hormonal influence of which the brain plays a key role in stimulating all other organs involved such as the pituitary gland and the breast. The two main hormones are the prolactin [from the anterior pituitary gland] and the oxytocin hormone [from the posterior pituitary gland]. The prolactin hormone targets the acini cells of the breast while the oxytocin targets the cells around the milk producing acini cells called the Myoepithelial cells.
