WHY some pregnancies have TOO MUCH FLUID - POLYHYDRAMNIOS
Some pregnancies will appear big not because they have a big baby or more than one baby, merely because there is TOO MUCH FLUID around the baby. This is a condition called POLYHYDRAMNIOS OR HYDRAMNIOS. A number of factors can cause an increase in the amount of fluid around baby with the commonest being structural or congenital conditions that affect FETAL SWALLOWING, INCREASED URINE PRODUCTION and alteration of elimination. Some metabolic maternal diseases increase the chances of POLYHYDRAMNIOS, such as Diabetes in which maternal hyperglycaemia leads to fetal osmotic diuresis. Often remains asymptomatic unless in extreme cases where there is oedema and dyspnoea and often diagnosed on ultrasonography. This video SIMPLIFIES POLYHYDRAMNIOS and highlights all you need to know about it.
