7 foot tall hugelkultur with a fifth of the effort
https://permies.com/hug This clip introduces a more efficient method for building hugelkultur beds that maximizes height while minimizing digging. Instead of burying logs in a deep trench, the technique uses excavated soil from future garden paths to build tall hugelkultur mounds with far less effort. The concept is simple: build upward rather than downward. Wood is layered above the original ground level while soil is excavated from the sides and placed on top. The result is a taller growing mound, sunken pathways that improve access and moisture retention, and significantly less excavation than traditional trench-style hugelkultur. The approach also adapts well to rocky sites where digging deep isn't possible. Key points • Build hugelkultur upward instead of burying wood in deep trenches • Use soil from future pathways to cover the woody material • Add additional layers of wood as the mound grows taller • Alternate the direction of straight logs to improve structural stability • Layer wood and soil repeatedly to create a strong internal framework • A 4-foot mound with a 3-foot pathway creates the benefits of a 7-foot hugelkultur • Sunken pathways increase the effective height without additional excavation • This method requires substantially less work than trench-based designs • Traditional trench hugelkultur often involves unnecessary digging and backfilling • The technique works well with both hand tools and excavators • Rocky sites can still support effective hugelkultur using above-ground construction • Designing pathways as part of the system improves efficiency and garden function 0:00 Building hugelkultur from the ground up 0:15 Layering wood and soil to create height 0:40 Creating sunken pathways alongside the mound 1:00 Alternating log directions for better structure 1:19 Why trench-style hugelkultur is less efficient 1:35 Using paths to create the effect of a taller mound 2:02 Reducing labor through smarter hugelkultur design 2:21 Adapting the method for rocky ground and bedrock https://gardenmastercourse.com ▶ Stuff like this at permies.com: Hugelkultur https://permies.com/hug plants, organic gardening, permaculture gardening, fungi and soil https://permies.com/c/growies giant hugelkultur (12 feet tall) at basecamp https://permies.com/t/giant-hugelkultur ▶ Some of my videos that are kinda like this video: ▶️ planting seeds on our 12 foot tall hugelkultur - raised bed garden • planting seeds on our 12 foot tall hugelku... ▶️ double or triple what you can grow in the same garden space with hugelkultur • double or triple what you can grow in the ... ▶️ berms and big hugelkultur plus a quick dry stack retaining wall • berms and big hugelkultur plus a quick dry... ▶ If you are into podcasts, here's a smattering of the podcasts I've put out on wofati and eco building: Podcast 696 – Permaculture Smackdown 29: Hugelkultur https://permies.com/wiki/273327/Podca...
