Instead of burying logs in a deep trench, the technique uses excavated soil from future garden paths to build tall hugelkultur mounds with far less effort. The concept is simple: build upward rather than downward. Wood is layered above the original ground level while soil is excavated from the sides and placed on top. The result is a taller growing mound, sunken pathways that improve access and moisture retention, and significantly less excavation than traditional trench-style hugelkultur. The approach also adapts well to rocky sites where digging deep isn't possible.
