Deadly Somme Diversion

On the eve of the Battle of the Somme, another tragedy unfolded far from the main battlefield. In this episode of Old Front Line, we tell the moving story of the Southdowns Battalions of the Royal Sussex Regiment, whose attack at the Boar's Head, near Richebourg, on 30 June 1916 became known as The Day Sussex Died. Raised in 1914 by Colonel Claude Lowther, the Southdowns Battalions were formed from volunteers across Sussex who answered the call to serve together. Their journey took them from enthusiastic recruits to the trenches of northern France, where they became part of a diversionary attack intended to prevent German troops from being moved to the Somme. We also visit the key locations connected with their story, including Richebourg Church, the battlefield at the Boar's Head, and St Vaast Post Military Cemetery, where many of the fallen are buried today.
