明治神宮の建築　～百年の時を経て重要文化財へ～

In 2020, the 100th anniversary of the shrine's founding, 36 buildings, including the main shrine, were designated as Important Cultural Properties. Meiji Shrine was established in 1920 as a shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. The main shrine and other buildings were destroyed in an air raid in 1945, but were rebuilt in 1958. The reconstruction made use of the buildings that survived the fire and the original foundations, while also making it easier for visitors to worship, such as by adding an outer worship hall that allows a view of the ritual ceremonies in the inner worship hall. The large group of shrine buildings was brought together with excellent and distinctive designs, and the shrine was recognized as being of great value as an architectural complex that aimed to be a shrine worthy of post-war Japan.
