‘Virality is a glitch’: Anurag Minus Verma on power, caste and the internet’s illusions

In this illuminating conversation with Abhinandan Sekhri, writer and creator Anurag Minus Verma discusses his book The Great Indian Brain Rot and how he emerged as a meaningful voice online. He recalls that his podcast stood out early on because he invited intellectuals from marginalised communities. “I think it was the first time audiences saw a Dalit speaking to a Dalit,” he says. When the discussion turns to cinema, Abhinandan asks whether a film centred on a Dalit woman is possible in India today. Anurag argues that even anti-caste films are rarely made by Dalit filmmakers. “We are not at the stage of choosing. We’ll reach a higher understanding of filmmaking only when we have the power to make films. Right now, we don’t have any.” He adds that any serious exploration of Indian society is impossible without engaging with caste. On virality – referencing figures like the famous “Dancing Uncle” – Anurag notes that people mistake going viral for success. “Virality is mostly a glitch in the system. The real task is to create consistently, build an audience, and build trust, like a news organisation.” Discussing the regulation of online user-generated content, he calls it dangerous.
