Sobre acordos profundos | Conferência com João Salles

In this lecture, philosopher and academic João Carlos Salles presents the central thesis of his book Cats, Fish, and Elephants (2024), in dialogue with the famous notion of “deep disagreements,” proposed by Robert Fogelin in 1985. Fogelin suggested that certain debates—such as those involving abortion or affirmative action—cannot be resolved with arguments, as they compromise the very foundations of rational argumentation. But does this reading faithfully represent Wittgenstein's thought? Salles proposes another approach: a careful reading of the Austrian philosopher reveals not only the impasse, but also the possibility of deep agreements—invisible structures that underpin language, culture, and common experience.
