Our journey through Spain took us through wild beaches, the Deadly Gorge, and the driest place in Spain and Europe – Cabo de Gata. It is the wildest and driest place on the Iberian Peninsula (average rainfall 150-170 mm, with the lowest rainfall being 52 mm in 1981). However, the area it occupies is not considered a desert, despite the nearby Tabernas Desert, located 30 km to the northwest. Cabo de Gata is located on the southeastern tip of the province of Almería. Its coastline is defined by cliffs, coves, and beaches. This area, declared a biosphere reserve in 1997, encompasses the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park and parts of its surroundings. The mountains of Cape Gata are of volcanic origin, and its terrain is characterized by sharp rock points, dykes, craters, cornices, and domes.
