Hey! Are you wondering what Easter is like in Spain? We also really wanted to find out and experience Easter here. Semana Santa, or Holy Week in Spain, is marked by numerous Passion processions that pass through the streets of cities. In Catalonia, the most solemn procession takes place in Tarragona. We went there after Domingos de Ramos, or Palm Sunday, which was celebrated in the town of Tarrega. Holy Week is organized by the religious brotherhoods (Cofradias) that exist in every parish. On Good Friday, the PASOS, or floats with figures of Christ and genre scenes from the Bible, are carried out of churches. Such a feretory can weigh up to half a ton. The floats are carried by Los Costaleros. The term comes from the word "costal," which refers to a specific cap that helps to properly rest the beam on the neck or back. Members of the brotherhood dress in long tunics and pointed hats, with only holes for the eyes. These are the Nazarenos, or penitents. The hooded face symbolizes an attitude of shame and penance. The conical shape of the cap suggests that penance ascends to heaven, from where God forgives the sinner's sin. In a very solemn atmosphere, to the rhythm of the drums of martyrdom (Tambores de Pasion), the procession traverses the city streets for several hours. The procession made a huge impression on us.
