Wax (beeswax or castor wax) helps make the paint more flexible, reduce oil and pigment separation during storage, and slightly improve brushstroke retention. According to Just Paint / Golden Artist Colors, beeswax is best added in small quantities – 1-3% by weight of the oil, with an upper limit of approximately 5%. Natural Pigments / Rublev also recommends adding approximately 2-4% white beeswax when grinding when making your own oil paints. Exceeding approximately 5% wax in oil can cause the paint film to become softer, more sensitive to solvents, matte, and potentially have poorer adhesion. Therefore, it's best to control the overall impasto with aluminum stearate or Aerosil. Aerosil acts as a thixotropic additive and helps the paint hold its shape. Aluminum stearate also prevents paint from flowing; it is traditionally used to stabilize pigment in oil and reduce separation. For homemade titanium white, wax is often unnecessary: ​​if the pigment is high-quality and well-ground, the paint can work just fine with just the pigment and oil. However, with Mars and Ochres, wax is often useful. These pigments can be capricious during storage, changing consistency, separating, becoming "rubbery," and becoming difficult to work with.
