Translating a photograph into a painting using direct color comparison. The goal is not simply to replicate the photo, but to deliberately change the saturation and temperature of the color while maintaining the overall tonality. The color is selected next to the photograph, allowing you to clearly see how it "works" in the context and how it interacts with the image. If it matches tonally, you can confidently enhance or tone down the saturation within these tonal boundaries, shifting the temperature toward warmer or cooler. This makes the color more interesting, vibrant, and unconventional. However, it's important to feel the boundaries of what's acceptable, to understand when a hue goes beyond the bounds and disrupts the integrity. This is especially noticeable in the close proximity of color to the photograph. When working using the classic palette principle, color selection occurs "blindly," with shades chosen almost at random. The eye darts between the palette and the photo, the analysis takes place in the mind, without any visual reference. Color is selected roughly, intuitively. Direct comparisons allow even the most experienced artist to see color in context, interactively.
