His mother's name was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, just as his father had done. At that time, the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem and besieged the city. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon stood before the city while his servants besieged it. Then Jehoiachin king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, along with his mother, his servants, his officials, and his eunuchs. The king of Babylon took him away in the eighth year of his reign. He also took away all the treasures of the LORD's temple and the treasures of the royal palace. He broke up all the gold objects that Solomon king of Israel had made for the LORD's temple, just as the LORD had said. He carried away all Jerusalem into exile—all the officials, all the mighty warriors, ten thousand captives, all the smiths and smiths. Only the poorest of the people of the land remained. He also carried Jehoiachin away to Babylon. He also carried away the king's mother, the king's wives, his officials, and the nobles of the land from Jerusalem to Babylon. The king of Babylon carried away into exile all the distinguished men, seven thousand of them, the blacksmiths and smiths, one thousand of them, and all the warriors. In his place, the king of Babylon installed his uncle, Mattaniah, as king, changing his name to Zedekiah. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 79 (78), 1b-2, 3-4, 5, and 8, 9 (R.: cf. 9cd) Deliver us, O God, for Your name's sake. O God, the Gentiles have invaded Your inheritance, † they have defiled Your holy temple, * they have reduced Jerusalem to ruins. * They have given the bodies of Your servants to the birds of the air, * the bodies of Your faithful to the beasts of the earth. Their blood was shed like water around Jerusalem, * and there was no one to bury them. We have become the object of contempt to our neighbors, * a scorn and a laughingstock to those around us. How long, Lord? † Will you be angry forever? * And will your anger burn like fire? Do not remember the sins of our ancestors, † May your mercy come quickly to us, * for we are very weak. Help us, God our Savior, * for the glory of your name; free us and forgive our sins * for your name's sake. SINGING BEFORE THE GOSPEL Jn 14:23 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah GOSPEL Mt 7:21-29 A house built on rock and a house built on sand Jesus said to his disciples: "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out demons, and in your name perform many mighty works?' Then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.' Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the floods came, the winds blew and beat against that house. Yet it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be likened to a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, the winds blew and beat against that house. And it fell, and great was its fall." When Jesus had finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching. For he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes. 2 Kings 24:8-17; Matthew 7:21-29
