The city remained under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah's reign. In the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, when the famine was raging in the city and there was no food for the people of the land, a breach was made in the city wall. All the men fled from the city by night through the gate between the double walls above the king's gardens. The Chaldeans were around the city. So they went out by the way toward the Arabah. But the Chaldean army pursued the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho, and his whole army deserted him and was routed. So they captured the king and brought him to Riblah, the king of Babylon, and pronounced sentence on him. Zedekiah's sons were killed before his eyes. The king of Babylon then gouged out Zedekiah's eyes and bound him with bronze fetters. He carried him away to Babylon. In the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month—which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon—Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, entered Jerusalem. He burned the temple of the LORD, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem—all the great houses. Then the entire Chaldean army, which was with the captain of the guard, tore down the wall around Jerusalem. Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, carried away into exile the rest of the people who remained in the city, the deserters who had gone over to the king of Babylon, and the remaining multitude. But of the poor people of the land, the captain of the guard left some to tend the vineyards and the fields. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 137 (136): 1-2, 3, 4-5, 6 (R.: cf. 6b) O holy church, I will not forget you. By the rivers of Babylon we sat, * weeping at the memory of Zion. On the poplars of that land * we hung our harps. For those who had taken us captive * demanded a song from us. Our oppressors demanded a song of joy: * "Sing to us one of the songs of Zion!" How can we sing the Lord's song * in a strange land? Jerusalem, if I forget you, * may my right hand wither. May my tongue stick to my throat, * if I do not remember you, if I do not exalt Jerusalem * above all my joy. SINGING BEFORE THE GOSPEL Cf. Mt 8:17 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia Jesus took our infirmities upon himself and carried our diseases. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia GOSPEL Mt 8:1-4 Healing of the Leper When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And behold, a leper came and fell down before him, saying, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I will; be clean!" And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Jesus said to him, "See that you do not tell anyone about this, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." 2 Kings 25:1-12; Matthew 8:1-4
