Liminal Space Photograph - The Strange Beauty of the Liminal

In this video I set out to photograph liminal spaces and explore what makes them so fascinating. Liminal spaces are places that feel strangely familiar yet unsettling — transitional environments that exist between one state and another. They can evoke nostalgia, unease, and memories that are difficult to place. The journey begins at a deserted children’s play park late at night, where long exposure photography captures the eerie stillness of a place normally filled with life and noise. Empty swings, artificial light and silence combine to create a powerful sense of lost childhood memory. From there I move to a pedestrian underpass covered in graffiti and scattered litter. While photographing the textures and atmosphere of this edgy environment, I talk about the idea that liminal spaces are fundamentally transitional — spaces that exist between destinations rather than as destinations themselves. The exploration continues inside a multi-storey car park where the conversation shifts toward a deeper question: why should a photograph exist at all? What draws us to document spaces that feel temporary, forgotten, or overlooked? Finally, the night ends in a pub with a well-earned beer and the realization that this exploration is far from finished. Liminal spaces are everywhere, and there is much more to discover.
