Loose Watercolor Layers: Embrace Texture, Salt, and Atmosphere In this tutorial, I push a layered watercolor painting into a “danger zone” on purpose, testing how far the washes can go and whether the colors will turn muddy before I try it on my actual paper. I let the painting evolve into something unexpected, embracing cauliflowers and unplanned textures to keep it misty, mysterious, and atmospheric—almost like ice cliffs in Antarctica. Even though it could look finished early, I keep going to practice being brave, smudging areas for better atmospheric perspective and even “smashing” my brush to get the results I want.
