It replaced the ZIL-157 truck. A significant part of these vehicles were produced for the Soviet Army. In 1960, a vehicle with higher cross-country ability, the ZIL-132, was offered, but it did not go into production. The ZIL-131 vehicle was produced since 1966. In 1986, a modernized version appeared - the ZIL-131N. The modernized version was produced both with a carburetor engine (ZIL-131N) and with various diesel engines (ZIL-131N1 and ZIL-131N2). The upgraded ZIL-508.10 petrol engine featured an increased compression ratio, allowing the vehicle to be used on higher-octane fuel A-76 and AI-93, and screw intake ports in the cylinder head. The production of the ZIL-131N in Moscow was discontinued in 1994 due to the launch of the ZIL-4334, but the Ural Automobile Engine Plant continued to produce the ZIL-131N until 2002. It was then replaced by the ZIL-433420, as well as a complete analogue of the ZIL-131N under the AMUR-531320 brand, including a diesel engine.
