It was the main model. It replaced the ZIL-157 truck. A significant number of these vehicles were produced for the Soviet Army. In 1960, a more capable ZIL-132 was offered, but it never went into production. The ZIL-131 was produced from 1966. In 1986, a modernized version, the ZIL-131N, was released. The modernized version was produced with both a carbureted engine (ZIL-131N) and various diesel engines (ZIL-131N1 and ZIL-131N2). The modernized ZIL-508.10 gasoline engine featured a higher compression ratio, allowing the vehicle to run on higher-octane fuels such as A-76 and AI-93, and screw-in intake ports in the cylinder head. Production of the ZIL-131N in Moscow ceased in 1994 due to the introduction of the ZIL-4334, but production of the ZIL-131N continued at the Ural Automobile Engine Plant until 2002. It was then replaced by the ZIL-433420, as well as a complete analogue of the ZIL-131N, branded AMUR-531320, also with a diesel engine.
