¿Por Qué Un ABRAZO Puede Ser Más IMPORTANTE Que La Comida?
Harlow's experiment with monkeys demonstrated something that forever changed the psychology of love: the bond is born not from food, but from touch. Why does an infant choose a cuddle over food? In the 1950s, Harry Harlow placed infant rhesus monkeys with two surrogate mothers: a wire mother that provided milk and a cloth mother that only provided warmth. The babies chose the comfort of touch over food, spending up to eighteen hours a day cuddled with the cloth mother. With the secure base experiment and the disturbing "monster mothers," Harlow debunked the old "pantry theory" and, along with John Bowlby, laid the foundations for attachment theory. In this video, we tell you about the experiment, its darker ethical implications (emotional deprivation and isolation), and why your need for affection is as hardwired as hunger. 0:00 Two Mothers, an Impossible Choice 0:59 When Love Was a "Stomach Trick" 2:10 Harry Harlow Appears 2:35 Two Fake Mothers: Fabric vs. Wire 3:30 They Choose the Hug: The Comfort of Touch 5:18 The Secure Base: The Second Test 6:46 The "Monster Mothers" 7:56 The Nature of Love and Attachment Theory 9:46 The Dark Side of the Experiment 11:06 Why You Seek a Hug (The Mirror) Sources: Harry Harlow, "The Nature of Love" (speech before the APA, 1958); studies with infant rhesus monkeys at the University of Wisconsin (1950s-1960s); John Bowlby's attachment theory.
