It Took 5 Attempts… 💔
We Had To Pull Him Out… 💔 Three years ago, our son Teddy was diagnosed with AML leukaemia at just 9 months old. After chemotherapy and a life-saving stem cell transplant at Great Ormond Street Hospital, we began the long road of recovery. In the last episode, removing Teddy’s NG tube felt like a huge turning point — for the first time, life started to feel like it might be moving forward again. But recovery after childhood cancer is never simple. In this episode (Months 13–15 post treatment), we faced new challenges that reminded us just how fragile progress can be. Teddy had to return to Great Ormond Street Hospital for important tests including a CT scan, echocardiogram and clinic checks — but what should have been routine quickly became one of the hardest moments we’ve faced, as doctors needed multiple attempts to successfully cannulate him. At the same time, we made a big step towards normal life by starting nursery… but within days, everything changed. A chickenpox outbreak meant Teddy was at serious risk, and we were faced with a difficult decision no parent wants to make. We ultimately chose to pull him out of nursery to protect his health — a reminder that even as things improve, the fear never fully disappears. This is the reality of life after childhood cancer — the progress, the setbacks, and the constant decisions to keep your child safe. This series follows the two years after our son finished treatment for AML leukaemia — broken down into eight chapters, each covering three months at a time, told honestly from a mum’s perspective. Because when you’re sitting in a hospital room at 2am searching for hope… you need to know that life can exist on the other side.
