Born into a German-American family, Niebuhr became one of the most influential Christian thinkers of the twentieth century. Throughout his life he spoke out against injustice, racism, Nazism, and political extremism while advocating for workers' rights and social responsibility. His ideas influenced public figures ranging from Martin Luther King Jr. to American presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. Today, however, Niebuhr is perhaps best remembered as the author of the Serenity Prayer: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference." Beloved by millions around the world, especially those involved in recovery fellowships such as Alcoholics Anonymous, the Serenity Prayer continues to offer comfort, guidance, and hope.
