Creating Giant Witch's Cauldron Halloween Props With Foam

Making a DIY witch's cauldron can be as simple as painting a plastic bucket or as elaborate as building a large textured cauldron prop using everyday household items or blocks of foam. Many people modify and makeover old Halloween store bought cauldrons to make them spookier. Some have even used Mod Podge mixed with oatmeal or sand to create "rusty" or aged spots on their DIY Witch Cauldron Craft. To make large, oversized cauldrons many have used large plastic utility tubs or 17-gallon storage bins. They add structure by making cardboard ribs to create a round shape. They cut cardboard into arched strips and glue them vertically around the tub to give it a rounded belly. A pool noodle or pipe insulation foam can be added for the thick top lip. A sliced pool noodle lengthwise will fit it over the top edge of your tub and secured with hot glue or tape. Wrapping the entire structure in duct tape or layers of newspaper dipped in a glue-water mixture (papier-mâché) can create a uniform surface. We chose to create our large realistic Halloween witch cauldron decoration out of foam. Every haunted house needs a large bubbling pot kettle to brew potions in. We were inspired by the Leaky Cauldron Restaurant from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios. They have a massive black cauldron inside a fireplace creating the perfect ambience. We knew we had to make a giant cauldron big enough for people to stand inside for a photo op. The large cauldron photo op was sculpted out of foam and hard coated with fiberglass and resin. We gave the cauldron a faux cast iron paint finish by painting and aging several colors. You can spray or roll the entire piece with matte black paint and then sponge rust colors. Once the black is dry, dab on metallic copper or sage green acrylic paint to mimic rust or spilled potion. We added driftwood around the bottom base for an extra detail. Another cool effect is to use expanding spray foam around the rim to create a frothy, overflowing bubbling potion effect. The rim can then be painted with neon green paint once it hardens. You can add glowing embers inside the coals by placing orange string lights on the plywood base and cover them with expanding foam or sticks. You can then set the cauldron on top to make it look like it's over a hot fire. You could also place a small fog machine or a mist maker inside a bowl of water hidden within the cauldron to create fog and mist. We have seen some people add wiper motors with rotating plates that have giant floating bubbles. People hot glue various sizes of iridescent clear Christmas ornaments together to look like rising bubbles. Some even fill the bubbles with green fairy lights between them.
