Iwase District, located at the northern edge of Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Stepping off the edge of the plateau behind Aoki Shrine, one finds a haven free from the hustle and bustle of tourists, revealing the everyday life of this ancient capital, where life and faith intertwine intimately. While Hoanji Temple, founded in 1445, has a strict gate that prohibits entry to non-parishioners, the Bato Kannon statue and road signs erected in 1919 quietly tell the story of the area's history. At Iwase Gosha Inari Shrine, located next to an elementary school, the shrine buildings, rebuilt after surviving the devastation of the Great Kanto Earthquake, mark a time that contrasts sharply with the modern school. Further along, Daichoji Temple, associated with the later Hojo clan, appears. A large ginkgo tree said to have been planted by Tokugawa Ieyasu and the main hall, rebuilt in 1911, stand majestically in the soft autumn sunlight.
