How to Identify An Unknown Molecule Using Hydrogen NMR Spectroscopy - Worked Example!
In today’s lesson, I go through how to interpret Hydrogen (proton) NMR spectra, in order to identify an unknown molecule, particularly the ETHER functional group. I show you three pieces of important information you can extract from NMR spectra, namely the number of proton environments, the number of hydrogens in each environment (ratio/integration value) and the relationship between electronegativity and chemical shift. We put all these clues together to derive the structure of the molecule. This is the THIRD lesson in a series on NMR spectroscopy questions typically encountered in A-level and AP Chemistry.
