Spectroscopy Masterclass: Identifying Molecules From Spectra (H NMR, Mass Spec, Empirical formula)
TODAY’S LESSON: In today’s lesson, I go through another example of how to identify the structure of a molecule when given NMR spectra, mass spectra and empirical formula information. The NMR is carried out in a solvent of D2O – I explain what that means and how it affects the NMR spectra. I describe the process I use, step-by-step, which can be applied to any other mixed spectroscopic technique question you may see in an exam paper. This lesson will be helpful to those studying A-level Chemistry, Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry or International Baccalaureate (IB), and is part of a wider series on identifying organic molecules using combined spectroscopic techniques.
