David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly

This video is about David Henry Hwang's play M. Butterfly, which adapts the opera Madame Butterfly to comment on issues of racism, orientalism, and gender roles. Hwang challenges stereotypes of East Asians--including notions of Asian women's submissiveness and of Asian men's femininity--and inverts the cultural power schema at the heart of Madame Butterfly to reveal the dangers inherent in treating others according to one's stereotypes of them.
