During German occupation, the area was used as training ground for testing missiles. Near the end of the war, the Germans tested V1 and V2 rockets on the training ground in Blizna. Most of the locals were displaced, but Andrzej Augustynowicz’s father stayed there, because the Germans needed forestry workers to supervise the area. This allowed Augustynowicz’s father to work for the Home Army, providing them with rocket scraps found in the are after explosions. He lived in constant fear of being found out. One time an important Third Reich official arrived in the area to hunt boar – the hunting trip turned out very successful and Andrzej’s father took advantage of the Germans’ good mood by intervening on behalf of his brother-in-law, Józef Frączek, who was imprisoned at Auschwitz. The Germans agreed to transfer Józef Frączek from Auschwitz to the camp in Pustków near Dębica. Augustynowicz’s father signed a document according to which he was responsible for his brother-in-law’s actions, i.e. in the case of his escape, the whole family would be held responsible. Józef Frączek escaped during the evacuation of the Pustków camp, so the Germans arrested the entire Augustynowicz family. The father was to be shot, while the mother, Andrzej and his two younger siblings were sent to KL Ravensbrück.
