The Wind Nearly Ended This Wild Camp

In this solo wild camping adventure, I head up to Rannerdale Knotts in the Lake District for what I thought would be a peaceful night under clear skies. The forecast looked calm, the views were breathtaking, and after a short but brutally steep hike, I found a beautiful exposed pitch overlooking the mountains. At first, it felt like the perfect summer wild camp — golden light, endless views, and the whole summit to myself. But as the evening went on, the wind had other plans. What started as a breezy night quickly turned into one of the most intense wild camps I’ve ever experienced. Powerful gusts battered the tent through the night, the fabric shook constantly, the doors began caving in, and sleep became almost impossible. At one point, I had to use my trekking poles inside the tent just to help support it against the wind. The forecast said light winds and no rain, but by the early hours of the morning, I was sitting wide awake in the dark, listening to the tent take hit after hit, wondering if it would hold until sunrise. Despite the chaos, this camp was still beautiful in its own way. The sunset, the mountain views, the changing weather, and the rawness of being out there alone reminded me why I love wild camping so much — even when it doesn’t go to plan. This video captures the reality of wild camping when conditions suddenly change, and how quickly a peaceful night in the mountains can become a proper test of both gear and mindset.
