This I Dig of You - Al McLean & Brian Hurley
This installment of Jazz, Period. features Al McLean with Shanghai based bassist Brian Hurley. The pair are joined by fine Montreal guitarist Carlos Jimenez and West Coast drummer Jesse Cahill. Cahill, incidentally, was very pleased to be involved in a Jazz, Period. shoot as he is an avid photographer in addition to his work in music. On this Hank Mobley Hard Bop tune, McLean takes up a vintage Selmer alto saxophone. On alto, we hear shades of Cannonball Adderly and Charlie Parker in McLean's playing. Inventive Bop lines, and an energetic pop to the forward leaning solo reveal the saxophonist's broad palette of color. Brian Hurley also steps back in time to a traditional and driving swing feel, laying a straight path for the band to stretch out on. Thank you to Twigg Musique and Diese Onze for sponsoring this Jazz, Period. session. More Montreal Jazz to come!
