The Music Room Presents: Wild Earth Ensemble

Whimsical at times, precise at others, but always purposeful, each musician in the Wild Earth Ensemble deeply understands their part in the whole. There are many world influences at work here. Listening closely, they are seamlessly interwoven by masters well-schooled in global music, sounding like a conversation between traditions. On "Seventh Moon," the influence lands somewhere between the far east and the Greek Isles, layered and tempered. For the first few tracks, you can't help but hear echoes of Dead Can Dance's Spirit Chaser album, that modern yet somehow ancient atmosphere is very present. Then on the "Nyckelharpa Medley," the strings of the rarely seen instrument the song is named for, gently pull the other instruments into a story reminiscent of American folk, weaving a lyrical tale while the piano and hammered dulcimer keep the momentum moving. As the track develops, Victor Mestas (Piano) and BJ Shrestha (Tabla) build a subtle Irish Folk undertone before the piano takes over the melody. Sandra Wong brings the medley home with the Nyckelharpa as the perfect ending to a great chapter you wished would keep going. From there, the set moves into a relaxing, whimsicality of the British Isles with a slight eastern influence, unhurried, assured, and completely absorbing.
