A visit to the Oldest Trees in Michigan and the Oldest City make this historical and fun! We are just beginning The Great Adventure to experience all 50 states! We'll uncover hidden gems, taste traditional foods, and share our adventures from each and every state. Being Michiganders it only seems right to start with Michigan as our very first state! Join Mom Dad Girl and 3 Little White Dogs as We share with you our Top Ten Favorites as we take you on a road trip through the Great Lakes State! Now these are not in order of importance, but more so a road trip route you could follow to visit all 10. Our first stop is Hartwick Pines State Park - the largest old growth forest in Michigan. It's also one of our favorite campgrounds in Michigan. The trees on the old growth forest trail at Hartwick Pines are estimated to be between 350 and 425 years old. And it's especially beautiful in the fall. For our next stop you follow 75 all the way to the top of the mitten. The Mackinac Bridge, also known as "The Big Mac" or "Mighty Mac", is 5 miles long. It's one of the world's longest suspension bridges and the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere. Stop #3 is the oldest city in Michigan - Sault. St. Marie - home of the world famous Soo Locks. From Sault St Marie, we'll take you to a place we've only been once before, but it's always stuck out in my mind as one of my personal favorites in all of Michigan ~ Grand Marais. Grand Marais is also the eastern start to the next on our Top Ten list - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. From the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, we'll head northwest to our very favorite location in all of Michigan- the Keewenaw Peninsula, and specifically Copper Harbor. We start to head south to round up our Top Ten heading back to the Mackinac Bridge and taking a ferry over to Mackinac Island. From Mackinaw, we'll head head to the west side of the mitten to Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore. (Ask Jason) As a Michigander for your whole life, what would you say are your favorite locations: Keewenaw Peninsula, Lake Michigan Shoreline is all amazing, but Ludington and Sleeping Bear Sand dunes. Alexis loves anything on Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula Most of our favorites are on one of the 4 Great Lakes, but our first one is inland...... Top Ten Michigan Locations: 1. Hartwick Pines 2. Mackinac Island 9. Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes 10. Ludington Honorable mentions are Holland, Grand Haven, and to be honest all of the Lake Michigan beach towns are pretty cool. Lake Huron is also worth an honorable mention. Although the beaches are much rockier on the Lake Huron side, there are some pretty cool historic lighthouses like the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse. And lastly, we do want to give Porcupine Mountains a shout out.
