Navajo Lake to Deer Creek | Cedar Breaks National Monument Steals the Show
Welcome friends to Episode 7 of The Long Way Home. If you are new here, I'm taking my Sportsmobile van Blitz back home from Tucson to Seattle, one stop at a time and I am taking you along with me! Catch up on the full journey here: • The Long Way Home. From Tucson to Seattle ... Today starts at Navajo Lake Campground and heads up to Cedar Breaks National Monument. It's over 10,000 feet and it was chilly to say the least. The wind and cold cut my exploring short, but this place is stunning even from a quick look. Next up is Panguitch, Utah. I stopped at a tiny pocket park downtown without realizing what it meant until I researched it after the trip. It's called Quilt Walk Park, and it memorializes seven rescuers who saved the town from starvation during the brutal winter of 1864. They used quilts as makeshift snowshoes to trek 40 miles over the mountains for food. There is a memorial statue and seven benches, one honoring each rescuer, with their stories inscribed. Then a stop for brekkie at Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort, an RV park right on the Sevier River. It was very kind of them to let me enjoy the river at no charge, thank you! Next a quick stop at Fremont Indian State Park, though the museum was closed for renovations (estimate to reopen is fall 2026) and it was too hot to hike. This one is going on my list to revisit. The site holds the largest known Fremont Indian village, uncovered during the construction of Interstate 70, and the museum preserves pottery, baskets, and arrowheads found there. The trails take you past petroglyphs and pictographs left behind by the Fremont people, and there's camping nearby at Castle Rock Campground or Sam Stowe Campground. Next time. The day keeps going. I make one more stop just outside Provo at Bridal Veil Falls before finally pulling into the Great Horned Owl Loop at Deer Creek State Park for the night, right on the south end of the reservoir off US-189. A driving-heavy day, but a full one.
