Natural dyeing with Sweet Cicely

Fresh sweet cicely leaves give a bright, slightly fluorescent yellow — and the whole studio smells of aniseed while you're doing it. In this video I'm dyeing wool and linen using early spring leaves, with a quick pH adjustment to get the best colour. Sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata) is a plant with a long history — it probably came to Britain with the Romans, was used as a sugar substitute before sugar was widely available, and was foraged again during wartime rationing. It's also one of those plants where the strong scent seems to signal good dye colour. Fennel does the same thing. Wool pre-mordanted with aluminium potassium sulphate at 8%. Want a mordanting video? Say so in the comments. The blog with the full method written down is here https://www.snapdragonlife.com/news/b...
