It first premiered at the 2019 Telluride Film Festival and was later released on November 15, 2019, by A24. The film stars Kelvin Harrison Jr., Taylor Russell, Lucas Hedges, Alexa Demie, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sterling K. Brown and more. It was heavily inspired by the lives and upbringings of its writer/director Trey Edward Schults and its star Kelvin Harrison Jr.; and marks the reunion of the duo following 2017’s “It Comes At Night”. Although not commercially successful, “Waves”, received positive reviews from audiences and critics, who praised Trey Edward Shults' direction, Drew Daniels cinematography, the use of music and the performances of its cast; particularly those of Kelvin Harrison Jr, Taylor Russell and Sterling K.
