Mount Shizugatake, one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, Elevation 421m Yogo Lake Tourist Center → Iwasakiyama → Oiwayama → Shizugatake Summit → A roughly 3-hour circular course walking along Lake Yogo. An incredibly easy hiking trail, making it a fantastic hiking course that feels like a school trip! This mountain is known as the site of the Battle of Shizugatake, fought during the Azuchi-Momoyama period between Hashiba Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie, who vied to inherit the power and system built by Oda Nobunaga after the Honnoji Incident. Hideyoshi, who won this battle, later became Toyotomi Hideyoshi and rose to become the ruler of Japan. The fierce battle that divided the Oda forces is brilliantly depicted in the "Warrior Statue" at the summit, which perfectly expresses the brutality of war. The views of Lake Biwa and Lake Yogo from the summit are also beautiful, and walking along Lake Yogo on the way back, listening to the sound of water and the calls of waterfowl, is incredibly soothing.
