A special Indian Classical dance 'Basanta Raas', Manipuri Raas Leela was presented during the ICUUFP-2025 organised by Manipur International University. Know Your Classical Dances: Basanta Raas Manipuri Raas Leela is one of the most refined traditions of Indian classical dance, deeply rooted in the Vaishnavite culture of Manipur. Among its various forms, Basanta Raas Leela holds a special place as a highly devotional dance drama that celebrates the divine love of Radha and Krishna along with the Gopis during the spring season (Basanta). Basanta Raas Leela is traditionally performed on the full moon night of the month of Chaitra (March–April), often coinciding with Holi, the festival of colours. The performance brings alive episodes of Krishna’s playful interactions with Radha and the Gopis, including Aber Khel (the symbolic play with coloured powder), Radha’s momentary displeasure (Radha Man) when Krishna turns his attention to Chandrabali, and his tender efforts to win Radha back. Through these narratives, the dance express’s themes of love, separation, longing, and ultimate union, reflecting the philosophy of bhakti, where human emotions become metaphors for the soul’s yearning for the divine. What distinguishes Basanta Raas is the graceful, fluid, and lyrical movement vocabulary of Manipuri dance. The steps are soft and circular, facial expressions are serene and restrained, and the overall mood remains meditative rather than dramatic. The costumes are among the most iconic features of this dance. Female dancers portraying Radha and the Gopis wear the elaborately decorated potloi—a stiff, cylindrical skirt adorned with embroidery, mirrors, and symbolic motifs believed to echo the mythical serpent Pakhangba. This is paired with a velvet blouse and a translucent veil, lending an ethereal quality to the performance. Krishna is depicted in distinctive male attire, often with a flute, reinforcing his divine presence. The dance is accompanied by traditional Manipuri music, including Sankirtana vocals and instruments such as the pung (double-headed drum), mandila (cymbals), bamboo flute, and sometimes the esraj. The music follows gentle rhythmic cycles that perfectly complement the flowing movements of the dancers. Basanta Raas Leela is usually staged in temple courtyards, creating a shared sacred space where performers and devotees participate together in devotion. More than a classical dance performance, it is a spiritual offering, symbolizing the journey of the soul toward divine love. Other important forms of Manipuri Raas include Maha Raas (performed in autumn), Kunja Raas, Nitya Raas, and Diva Raas but Basanta Raas remains unique for its celebration of spring, renewal, and the joyful yet profound love between Radha and Krishna.
