Cambodia - Khmer Rouge guerrillas defect

(10 Oct 1996) T/I: 10:48:10 Hundreds of Khmer Rouge soldiers have defected unconditionally to the Cambodian government, dealing a serious blow to the guerilla movement and increasing pressure on renegade leader Ieng Sary to follow suit. The divisions are based in an area near Samlaut, 80km southwest of Battambang, a Khmer Rouge military base which fell last week. General Keo Pong, a key player in the latest round of mass defections, defected from the Khmer Rouge earlier this year. He is now the deputy commander of Phnom Penh's military region three.
