ナルトは2019年生まれのメスザルで、今年7歳にして初めての出産を迎えた。2019年生まれの世代は個体数が多く、双子のグリ・グラや、目の前で誕生を見届けたマロンなど、思い入れの深い仲間が揃っている。その中で育ってきたナルトが母になるという出来事は、群れを長く観察してきた者にとって特別な意味を持っていた。 2026年4月25日のナルトは、お腹が大きく張り出し、まさに“パンパン”という表現がぴったりだった。ゴールデンウイーク前後には生まれるだろうと誰もが予想していたが、出産は一向に始まらない。初産は時間がかかると言われるものの、ナルトの場合はさすがに長すぎると感じるほどで、重いお腹を支えるために胡坐をかいて座る姿が印象的だった。 そしてようやく運命の日が訪れる。赤ちゃんが誕生したことは早い段階で把握していたものの、ナルトは群れの端に位置する30頭ほどの小集団に属しており、なかなか姿を確認できなかった。大人オスが3頭、赤ちゃんがナルトの子を含めて3頭いる構成で、どこか「離群予備軍」の雰囲気を漂わせていた。秋の山籠もり後の動向が少し心配になる集団でもある。 その集団の中には、なぜかランランとリンリンの姿もあった。ランランは元々フリーの立場で、群れを離れてついて行くタイプではないため、この配置は少し不思議に感じられた。 ナルトの赤ちゃんはおそらく女の子。誕生から半月ほど経っていたが、元気に育っている様子で安心した。一方で、新生児期からヨチヨチ歩きの期間を見られなかったことは少し残念でもある。しかし、初産にもかかわらずナルトは非常にしっかりしており、出産も育児も一人でやり遂げている。母に守られながら、赤ちゃんは健やかに成長していた。 この日、同級生のマロンも同じ集団にいた。マロンはナルトより先に二度目の出産を終えており、赤ちゃんは男の子。同級生のグリも24日に無事出産し、こちらも女の子だった。彼らについては別動画で紹介する予定だ。 ナルトの赤ちゃんは遊びに行きたそうにしていたが、ナルトの“拘束”が解けず、母の腕の中に留められていた。初産の母は過保護になりがちで、昨年のコロコロもその傾向が強かった。今後のナルトの育児がどのように進むのか、楽しみであり注目したいところだ。 今年はヤマモモが不作で、ナルトたちにとっては厳しい状況だが、そのおかげでこうして姿を見ることができた。秋には豊かな実りが訪れることを願いたい。 Naruto, a female Japanese macaque born in 2019, reached a major milestone this year: her very first birth at the age of seven. Growing up among such distinctive peers, Naruto’s transition into motherhood carried a special emotional weight for long-term observers of the troop. On April 25th, 2026, Naruto’s belly was strikingly large—so round and swollen that it seemed certain her baby would arrive around the Golden Week holidays. Yet days passed with no sign of labor. Although first-time mothers are known to take longer, Naruto’s case stretched that expectation to an almost humorous extreme. Her belly had grown so heavy that she often sat cross-legged, as if trying to support the weight from below. Every sign suggested the birth was imminent, but the moment simply refused to come. Eventually, the long-awaited day arrived. Observers confirmed that Naruto had given birth, but seeing her and the newborn proved surprisingly difficult. Naruto belongs to a small subgroup of about thirty individuals positioned at the edge of the main troop. This subgroup included three adult males and three infants, including Naruto’s newborn. The group carried a subtle sense of being “potential dispersers,” reminiscent of past individuals like Tora. Their future behavior after the autumn mountain season remains a point of concern. Unexpectedly, Ranran and Linlin were also present within this subgroup. Ranran, typically a free-ranging individual who does not follow others into isolation, made her presence particularly puzzling. Naruto’s baby is most likely a girl. Although already half a month old by the time she was finally seen, she appeared healthy and energetic. Missing the earliest newborn phase and the wobbly first steps was unfortunate, but seeing her thriving was a relief. Despite being a first-time mother, Naruto showed remarkable composure and responsibility. She had given birth alone and was raising her infant entirely on her own, protecting her with unwavering dedication. On the same day, Maron—another member of the 2019 cohort—was also present. Maron had already completed her second birth, welcoming a baby boy. Meanwhile, Guri, another peer from the same generation, had given birth on April 24th, also to a girl. However, Naruto’s protective grip remained firm. First-time mothers often show strong tendencies toward overprotection, and last year’s Korokoro was a prime example—still somewhat overprotective even at one year old. How Naruto’s maternal behavior will evolve in the coming months will be an interesting aspect to follow. This year, the Yamamomo fruit season has been poor, creating hardships for the troop. Yet ironically, this scarcity allowed observers to encounter Naruto more easily, as the monkeys moved more widely in search of food. While it is unfortunate for the macaques, it provided a rare opportunity to witness Naruto’s early days as a mother. We can only hope that the autumn season will bring abundant fruit and a more comfortable environment for the troop. Naruto’s first steps into motherhood mark the beginning of a new chapter—not only for her but for the entire 2019 generation, now raising the next wave of young macaques.
