CSIR SMART Village: Distribution of Terafil Water Filters in Kusunpur Village Kendrapara (Odisha), June 14, 2026. A significant initiative towards providing clean and safe drinking water was undertaken on June 14, 2026, in Kusunpur village, Kendrapara district, Odisha, under the CSIR-Smart Village Mission. On this occasion, Terafil water filters—developed by the CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT), Bhubaneswar—were distributed to 135 households and community buildings in the village to ensure access to clean drinking water for as many people as possible. Terafil is a low-cost, gravity-based terracotta (clay) water filter. It effectively reduces iron content in water by 90–95% while also significantly lowering turbidity, suspended particles, and microbial contamination. A key feature is that it requires neither electricity nor chemicals to operate. Made from natural clay-based materials, the filter is eco-friendly, requires minimal maintenance, and is suitable for water purification at both household and community levels. During the event, a live demonstration was conducted to educate villagers on the proper use, maintenance, and long-term operation of the filters. Awareness was also raised regarding the importance of clean and safe drinking water, the adverse health effects of consuming contaminated water, and measures to prevent water pollution. Villagers were also informed about best practices for the safe storage, use, and management of water. This program embodies the vision of the CSIR-Smart Village Mission, which aims to bring affordable and effective technologies to villages for community welfare by aligning scientific innovations with rural needs. This initiative is expected to reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases and improve public health in the village.
