CSIR SMART Village Mission Mode Project Bulletin 5: CSIR-NGRI, Hyderabad conducted Hydrogeophysical Mapping for Safe and Sustainable Water Availability Sawaipura, Rajasthan To support Sawaipura’s journey toward becoming a Smart Village, CSIR-NGRI recently conducted a high-tech hydrogeophysical survey. Hydrogeophysical mapping integrates geophysical methods with hydrogeology to map subsurface water resources, characterizing aquifers and geological structures without drilling. The mission was to solve the twin challenges of water scarcity and salinity by mapping the village’s subsurface using advanced "ground-scanning" technologies. The investigation revealed that while much of the shallow groundwater is saline especially in alluvial zone of village, hidden pockets of fresh water exist within the deep, fractured rock formations. These scanned images show potential zones of fresh water pockets and Managed Aquifer Recharge for resource sustainability. Additionally, the hard and compact zones are identified, suitable for safe waste disposal to prevent future contamination. Overall, this study helps towards a safe and sustainable water management, achieving the concept of a smart village.
