The first stop was the papal basilica "St. Peter" in the Vatican, built over the place where, according to ancient church tradition, the holy apostle Peter was buried after his martyrdom during the persecutions of Emperor Nero. Under the main altar is the venerated tomb of the chief apostle, to which pilgrims from all over the Christian world have flocked for centuries. Our small group of pilgrims – Alexy Ganda, Sasha, Elsa and I – knelt before the tomb of the holy apostle Peter. Alexy read an excerpt from the First Epistle of the holy Apostle Peter, after which we all sang a hymn and offered a prayer to the apostle of Christ. Many foreign pilgrims stopped, listened to the word of God and reverently joined in the common prayer and veneration of the saint. Among those present were pilgrims from Ukraine. They also joined in the prayer, asking God to grant peace, to end the suffering of war and to strengthen all people who have experienced division, hatred and violence. After the pilgrimage in the Vatican, we headed to the Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls – the magnificent temple erected over the tomb of the Holy Apostle Paul. After his martyrdom, his disciples buried his body along the ancient Ostia Way, and in the 4th century a large basilica was built over the Holy Sepulcher, which is still one of the most revered places of pilgrimage in the Christian world. In front of the tomb of the great Apostle to the Nations, an excerpt from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans was read, followed by prayer and eulogies in his honor. Particularly touching was the moment of personal prayer by Alexis and Sasha, who, due to the ongoing war, could not return to their homeland for years. Kneeling before the tomb of the Holy Apostle Paul, they fervently prayed for their people, for the coming of a just and lasting peace, and for their close friend, who had not managed to escape from Ukraine with them and had been mobilized against his will. Their sincere prayer was a testimony to the hope that a believer places in God's mercy and the intercession of the saints. They prayed for their friend to endure the trial that had befallen him. Sasha studies at the Faculty of Mathematics in Rome, and Alexy is a doctoral student in Rome. Both of them help the Russian Church Abroad in Rome "Saint Catherine" They help in the Holy Altar and the clergy. This blessed pilgrimage, carried out precisely on the day of memory of the holy first-principal apostles Peter and Paul according to the old calendar, left an unforgettable spiritual imprint. It reminded us that regardless of nationality, language or state borders, all Orthodox Christians are called to be one in Christ, united in prayer, love and hope for peace.
