«Doña Bárbara nuestra», con Francis Lugo
Is it possible that the characters in the great novel by Venezuelan writer Rómulo Gallegos (1884-1969) will still resonate with a reader in 2026? The third session of our FCU 2026 Conferences was presented by Francis Lugo, researcher and professor at the School of Letters of the Central University of Venezuela. In it, she proposes a shift in the traditional perspective on "Doña Bárbara." Far from viewing the work as a closed conflict, this presentation explores the "interstitial zone" where civilization and barbarism cease to be antagonistic and coexist in Venezuelan reality, in the book, and in our current society. Through a dialogic exercise, Lugo questions whether the dividing lines that defined our national identity have blurred over time. As a specialist in Latin American Literature, the speaker unravels the complexity of a novel that functions as a "perpetual dictation," offering keys to understanding why this classic remains a relevant tool for interpreting our present. This event invites us to delve into Venezuela's literary memory. It is an opportunity to rediscover the work of Rómulo Gallegos, not as an object of the past, but as a living map of our contemporary tensions and hopes.
