Thursday, Week 14: Edwin Dickinson -Black and White to Color using Acryla Gouache (16/04/2020)
Tough to state something that I haven't said before about the great Edwin Dickinson. To me he's the greatest American painter. Now, I'm fully conscious of what I'm saying. If this argument was about being purely rational, I would in a second say with no remorse that Edward Hopper is the most important American painter. Period. Hopper is America. Hopper is the whole of America. Plus he's an absolutely brilliant draughtsman, etcher, painter, responsible for creating some of the most powerful images of the 20th century. Period. Buuuut, painting digs deeper than rationale. And while Dickinson did not produce the amount of work Hopper did, while he did not depict the whole of a nation but instead a small part of upstate NY and the eastern coast of MA, there is something just enigmatic about his paintings and drawings. It's undeniable that his early work was influenced by Hawthorne, his teacher, but as his work matured, Dickinson only looked like Dickinson. He is undefinable in a way that only brilliant pieces of Art can be. There is only one other artist that stirs the feelings that invade me when I see a Dickinson and it's Goya. They both have this feeling of being inseparable links in the chain of what is Art history, but they also seem to belong to a separate universe. Today we celebrate Dickinson's slightly askew nature. He who does not belong, but is absolutely essential to the order of things.
