Triumph, tears, and truth: The media's role in Gambia’s democracy
As the world celebrates International Press Freedom Day, people everywhere are reflecting on the vital role of journalists in society. The Gambian media has a 200-year history—one that has played a central role in building the republic, establishing governance infrastructure, and ensuring the accountability that sustains it. In this episode of The Verified, we sat down with journalist Yusey Taylor of Askanwi and Madi Jobarteh of the Edward Francis Small Center for Rights and Justice. Together, we look at the media’s history, its contribution to Gambia’s democracy, the challenges it faces, and the threats that the concentration of media ownership and commercialization could pose to critical journalism.
