On 7 October 2001, ITN's Trevor McDonald presented ITV News at Ten's special coverage of the beginning of the US-led invasion of Afghanistan. Less than a month after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, the United States led a multinational coalition in the first major action of the so-called War on Terror, targetting the Taliban government of Afghanistan and Al Qaeda elements based in the country. Julian Manyon reported from behind the front outside Kabul as the first airstrikes hit. Bill Neely reported on the reaction in Pakistan, which was assisting the invading forces while maintaining a close relationship with the Taliban.
