During the large-scale crisis of the 3rd century, Roman cities found themselves cut off from aid from a professional army exhausted by war. We know much about high politics, civil wars, and the tip of the iceberg of Roman intrigue during this period. However, what is known about the inhabitants of the provinces and Roman colonies of that period? How did the ordinary population and local authorities cope with adversity? Roman written sources offer few examples of urban self-organization; they are more interested in events associated with the imperial courts. However, epigraphy and archaeology do exist, testifying to a high degree of local initiative; unfortunately, this evidence is often silent and indirect. But among hundreds, if not thousands, of lost stories, there is one exception. An altar discovered in Augsburg in 1992 has lifted the veil on popular military movements of the 3rd century.
