I Camped on a Mountain Where 14,000 People Died

Monte Piana sits at 2,300 metres in the Sexten Dolomites in northern Italy, and 110 years ago, it was one of the most brutal battlegrounds of World War One. In 1915, Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops both fought to control this single flat-topped summit. Whoever held it had a 360-degree view of every pass and valley for miles. So both sides sent soldiers up. And then neither could get the other one off. The front lines were sometimes just a few metres apart. For two and a half years. 14,000 soldiers died on this mountain. Most of them not from fighting, but from starvation, frostbite, and avalanches that were deliberately triggered by enemy artillery fire. I spent the day walking the old Italian military supply road, exploring the WW1 trenches still carved into the plateau, and crawling through the tunnels the soldiers dug by hand into the rock. Then I found a spot on the plateau, pitched my tent, and stayed the night, with the Tre Cime di Lavaredo behind me. This is the full overnight experience on a WW1 battlefield in the Dolomites. ☕ Support the channel: Patreon →   / join   Buy Me a Coffee → https://buymeacoffee.com/katieroams Paypal → https://paypal.me/klouisajayh4 ✨ Patreon Shoutouts ✨ Thank you to my Elite Roamers: • Johnny Dollar • Kieran.0178 • ben lisle • Raphael Gomes • Mike goodwin • Neil James • Bruce Duguid • bobz • jack • Tim Johnson • WilliamXD • Brett Smith • JOSEPH BRACKEN • Thurston hadley • Frits Wijngaarden • FullyTilted • Tony Ngo Stay curious, stay roaming 🌿 Katie Roams 🥾 @airalo #Airalo #eSIM #AiraloFamily #Dolomites #Camping #WW1Italy #MontePiana #ItalyHiking #TreCime #SextenDolomites #Camping #WW1 #DolomitesCamping
