The former Nishihiro Residence is a valuable building that conveys the image of the fishermen who supported the development of Choshi. Located at the mouth of the Tone River, Choshi has long prospered through water transport and fishing, and has been a key point where people and goods gathered. From the beginning of the Edo period, fishermen from Kishu (Wakayama) migrated to Choshi in droves. The Nishihiro family also moved there in the late Edo period as part of this trend, amassed their fortune through pawnbroking, and the second generation, Jirokichi, entered the fishing industry, supporting the economy and livelihoods of the Choshi region as a shipowner. During World War II, most of Choshi was damaged by air raids, and the old townscape disappeared, but fortunately, this area remained untouched. The building retains a long circulation path from the earthen floor to the tatami room, and a spatial configuration where work and life were integrated, allowing one to concretely imagine the life of that time. While the decoration is understated, the details possess a beauty underpinned by practicality, and the accumulation of daily life is reflected in the architecture's character. There is no flashy, tourist-oriented ostentation, but what is there is the persuasive power of a "house that has truly been used." The Nishihira Residence quietly conveys the memory of the port town of Choshi and the solid lives of its people. This heritage site is now carefully maintained and preserved by a benefactor who inherited it from the Nishihira family, and it seems to be managed by volunteers from the Choshi Geopark, which is run by the city of Choshi.
